ARTIST STATEMENT

Fibers and textiles are a major component of my work. I use them to express a sense of  familiarity with the themes I explore. I employ my identity and life experiences as a lens for exploring gender, sexuality, and the unconscious.

Circles are a common shape in my work. I use the shape as a symbol of feminine power. Circles relate to suns and moons as objects in our natural world that have been connected with gender. Many cultures have stories of the sun and moon as gendered beings. These celestial bodies are also clocks which dictate our lives on a daily basis. They give our psyches a rhythm of wake and dream. My use of circles also connects to my interest in native culture as a nod to dream catchers.

I’m interested in utilizing fibers as a medium for its tactile and sensual quality as well as its history. Fibers have played a huge role in the lives of women and native cultures, both of which are important to me. The perspectives of females and native cultures interest me, because their stories have been neglected in the documentation of history. I want to draw attention to these lives that are so often looked over.
